No news is good news
Sep 17 2011
Well, it may seem like nothing is going on here - not so! Back in the spring, I was offered the position of Creative Director at Pink Triangle Press, the publisher of Xtra and Fab magazines. It was the job I always wanted when I worked there from 1994-2001, and too good of an opportunity to pass up. Mind you, I'll still be taking on freelance projects when time and interest permits, so take a look around and do check back now and then!
Musicworks #108 hits the stands
Dec 7 2010
(Well, actually, it hit the stands a month ago. But I've been rather busy since then...)
The latest issue of Musicworks features Urbanvessel, the innovative performance art collective behind the critically acclaimed show Voicebox ("a competitive concert in a boxing ring"), performed recently at Toronto Harbourfront. Also included: the current sound art scene in Sweden; works and musings by Barry Truax, Kyle Brenders, Eldad Tsabary and Graham Flett; how to build your own miniature synthesizer and more! Animations for A Reason to Ride
Oct 25 2010
I've added some more animation work to my website portfolio. A Reason to Ride is a documentary that I directed (and produced
and coedited with Nico Stagias) about the Friends for Life Bike Rally, a 6-day, 600-kilometre charity bicycle ride from Toronto to Montreal. Since its inception in 1999, this incredible event has raised millions of dollars in much-needed funds for the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA). PWA is the largest service organization of its kind in Canada, providing crucial assistance to thousands of men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS.
For this (literally) moving documentary, each day of the ride was introduced by an animated map tracing the riders' route for that leg. This concept was extended to the closing titles and was set to sound design by Phil Strong, with music by Timon Wientzek.
I also designed the packaging for the DVD, which can be purchased from PWA directly for $20. All proceeds from the sale of the DVD go to the foundation.
New and improved website
Sept 29 2010
It's that time of year when days shorten, temperatures drop, synapses light up... and I redesign my website. I've used my expanding knowledge of CSS and HTML to include more content in a simple and clean format (no tables) while improving accessibility (no Flash) and integration with my social networks.
The most interesting part of the process came out of the decision to photograph some my work for the portfolio section, because sometimes a screenshot just doesn't capture the feel of a finished print piece. Unfortunately, my method of archiving has been to toss finished projects into an envelope/box/portfolio and shove it into the closet/shelf/trunk. So photographing those projects meant dragging everything out, tracking down missing pieces, sorting through it all and realizing that... I have a substantial body of work behind me.
While presenting a great opportunity to revisit where I've been, design-wise, over the past 15 years, the project also took on an archival nature. Photographing old materials for Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and Absolut Vodka was particularily interesting — these works are snapshots of important times in the culture of performing arts and marketing campaigns past.
There are more elements that I would like to add to the website (cycling jersey designs, contact form and more animation coming soon), but fall is here and it's time to get this show on the road. Thanks for stopping by — please take a look around and feel free to send comments to contact@lucindawallace.com.
New issue of Musicworks is out
June 25 2010
Musicworks Magazine #107 focuses on the theme of "escape," with articles on Richard Windeyer, Richard Marsella and the second wave of New Age music (no really). If you have never read Musicworks, you really should check it out — it's a fascinating look into the world of sound art and experimental music, and each issue comes with a CD with works by the featured artists. It's always a pleasure to design (even if I am exhausted by the end of it). To subscribe to Musicworks, go to musicworks.ca. (Um, please note that I did not design their current website — but that project is upcoming!)
Xtra redesign launches
Mar 25 2010
The much-anticipated new look for the Xtra group of gay and lesbian community publications has hit the streets across the country. The redesign includes cutting-edge typography, a more advanced grid structure, improved navigation and architecture, and a new logo to replace the resiliant but outdated "X" that had been in use since the first printing, way back in 1984. To read some of the media coverage about the redesign, check out Masthead Magazine.
